Organizing 2.0 2019

Ever wondered why no one showed up when you sent out a press release about your event or action? This workshop is for organizers and activists who want to learn how to get media to cover their campaigns and actions. We will talk about how to design actions that are newsworthy, how to do outreach to press, and how to use press and digital tools to create a buzz around your campaign. We will also cover media basics like messaging, press releases, media advisories, letters to the editor and op-eds. Facilitated by Naomi Dann and Trevor Smith, media strategists with the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Our organizers and members are constantly being interviewed and making sure they stay on topic can be trying. So I will be using some of the mistakes I've seen (and made) and channeling it to positive work in the future. Training the trainers is an important step in making sure communicators for orgs aren't constantly running damage control when someone slips up.
